5 Types of Foods that Worsen Skin Problems

"We are what we eat" is a quote that aptly describes the significance of food to the body. This is also proven by many studies which state that what we consume has an impact on body health, including skin health and appearance.

Believe it or not, there are some people who immediately experience certain skin conditions after carelessly consuming food for a day or weeks. Call it acne, rosacea, and much more that can happen continuously. Check out this article to find out what types of foods need to be reduced and avoided.

1. Sugar

Sweet foods such as various desserts are very tempting. In fact, some people start or have become addicted to foods that contain lots of sugar such as ice cream, chocolate, boba, iced coffee milk, and various cakes and cookies. According to research, consuming a lot of sugar contributes to long-term health problems, including skin; this has been proven in a 2018 study in China. The study showed that people who frequently consumed sugar-sweetened beverages were more likely to experience moderate to severe acne. Furthermore, a 2019 study states that the triggering factors of acne such as insulin, androgens, and sebum can decrease if we limit or reduce our consumption of foods containing a lot of sugar.

2. Fried Foods

After sugar, fried foods become the next list that worsens skin conditions. According to expert, fried foods produce saturated fat that is fully oxidized and can worsen the health of the body. In addition, eating too many fried foods can inhibit the ideal skin structure, which will result in pale skin, premature aging, and lead to more cystic acne growth. According to research, skin inflammation can be caused by an excess of omega-6 fatty acids and a lack of omega-3 fatty acids in the body.

3. Alcohol

It is certain to have a bad impact on the body, alcohol also has a relationship with skin health. Broadly speaking, alcohol can encourage skin dehydration, inflammation, and premature aging. Many dermatologists say that alcohol can strip away the moisture and nutrients needed to keep skin looking glowing, supple, and youthful. In addition, alcohol is also a driving factor for acne, rosacea, skin looks dull, and also wrinkles.

4. Dairy Products

Although there are still pros and cons related to the relationship between milk and acne. A study states that people who consume any type of milk, such as full cream, low fat, soy, and others have a higher chance of developing acne and inflammation than those who don't. This is due to the presence of hormones and bioactive molecules that have the potential to worsen acne in milk. Studies show that milk can stimulate excess sebum production and increase the build-up of skin cells in hair follicles, which is one of the causes of acne growth.

5. Sodium

Just like foods we mentioned above, consuming too much sodium (usually found in salty foods) is also related to the health of our skin. In fact, excess sodium causes dehydrated and dry skin. When we eat salty foods but do not meet the water needs of the body, an imbalance in the filtering system will draw out the water supply in the body. As a result of this process, the skin will become drier, cracked, and look dull. Also, when the skin becomes drier, oil production increases as an effort to moisturize the skin; this condition tends to clog and inflame the skin, resulting in pimples, blackheads and whiteheads.

Well, that's a list of the types of foods that need to be limited in order to maintain healthy body as well as the healthy skin. Food does often look tempting and tantalizing, however, you better pay attention to what you eat and see the magical things on your skin! Stay healthy, stay glow!

See to a doctor

If you have been suffering from skin problems that have been going on for a long time, it's time for you to go see a dermatologist. In addition to food, the doctor will check other things related to your condition and be able to provide appropriate diagnosis and treatment.
